LocalGuide: On-Device Document Assistant

LocalGuide is a general-purpose, on-device document assistant that answers questions from your own documents and cites the source behind every answer. You load your own documents, such as an employee handbook, a set of policies, or a reference guide, and ask plain questions about them; LocalGuide answers from those documents and shows the exact passage behind each answer. It runs fully offline, with nothing uploaded and no connection needed, so the documents and the questions stay on your device. The workspace has three panes, an on-device document library, a cited chat thread with selectable answer styles, and a source-passage panel. This is a skeletal, fully non-functional showcase, built with accessibility as an acceptance-level requirement.

Problem

  • People needed quick answers from their own documents, like a handbook or a set of policies, but reading through them by hand was slow.
  • Cloud AI tools meant uploading private documents, which many people and teams cannot do.
  • AI answers are easy to get but hard to trust when there is no source to check.
  • Sensitive documents, and the questions asked about them, needed to stay private.

Solution

  • Framed the on-device and offline constraints so documents and questions never leave the device.
  • Designed cited answers as the core value, with the source passage shown behind every answer.
  • Designed the three-pane workspace with a document library, a cited chat thread, and a source-passage panel.
  • Set accessibility as an acceptance-level requirement, with every state shown in words and shape, never color alone.

Results

  • Gave useful AI answers from a person's own documents without sending a file to the cloud.
  • Kept documents and questions on the device, with nothing uploaded and no connection needed.
  • Put the evidence up front by citing the source passage for every answer, so a reader can check it.
  • Gave readers selectable answer styles to fit how they want to read.

What you can explore here

  • The skeletal app below is a fully non-functional showcase of the interface. It is inert by design: there is no AI model, no upload, and no connection. Nothing you type is processed or leaves the device, the composer and the Add Document control are inert, and there is no file picker anywhere. The answers, citations, source passages, and documents shown are pre-baked sample data.
  • Cited by design, private by design. Every answer carries the documents and passages it came from, and every state, on-device, offline, indexed, and the selected answer style, is shown in words and shape, never color alone.

You

I have a question about the guidelines for using AI at work. Can you go through the AI Usage Guidelines I added to help me understand?

General / Plain-language

Yes. The guidelines let you use approved AI tools for everyday tasks like drafting, summarizing, and research.1 Two rules matter most: keep confidential company information out of any tool that is not on the approved list, and always review AI output before you rely on it or share it.2 The approved tools are listed in the guidelines.

Open a citation to read the source passage before you rely on it.

You

Under the remote work policy, does the company cover a home internet or equipment stipend, and what do I have to do to get it?

Business Analyst

Yes, within limits. The policy provides a monthly home-office stipend for approved remote employees, plus a one-time equipment allowance.1 To receive it you must have an approved remote-work arrangement on file and submit the request through your manager; reimbursement follows the standard expense process.2 The stipend starts the month after approval.
